2021-2022

Maribel

Hi! My name is Maribel Gonzalez Ramirez and I am from Riverside, California. I graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a B.A. in Public Policy. During my experience in college, I dedicated my time to various organizations and activities that geared towards helping marginalized students. My passion to help marginalized communities has sparked at an early age for me and I want to continue my service in achieving positive change. Being a first generation Latina student with DACA has made me appreciate everything I have in life. I am excited to learn and challenge myself to all the new experiences that I may have through the Jubilee Service Corps in LA. I am also eager to meet all of the fellows for this year!!

Also, some of my hobbies are baking goodies, roller skating although I am fairly new and still learning, and making DIY crafts. My goals for this year is to make long lasting relationships, grow as an individual, and make an impact!

Cristina

Hi everyone! I’m Cristina Guzman, and I was born and raised in Chicago. I recently graduated from Kalamazoo College in Michigan with a major in Anthropology and Sociology. I love discovering new music, working out and adventures! During my time at Kalamazoo, my passion for social justice grew through the connections that I made with the material in the classroom to issues that I see in my home city. Central to my interests are issues related to environmental justice at the intersection of gentrification, because of how prevalent these topics are to my community.

I have lived in the Midwest my whole life, so I am very excited to experience life in a new city full of opportunities. I am also looking forward to a year full of service, intentional living, and personal growth in Los Angeles with my fellow corps members!

Omar

As-salamu alaykum! My name is Omar. I'm 26 years old and originally from New York but raised in Atlanta. I'm really excited to join the JYLA team, and be of some use in the community!

I'm a muslim, and I love learning about my religion. I'm also a huge nerd, with a love for fighting games, anime, and western cartoons. I enjoy biking, and listening to podcasts, and I recently started getting into collecting DVDs. This year, I hope to build beautiful, long lasting relationships, organize with like minded individuals to make change, and help where I can. . .

Rebecca

Hi! My name is Rebecca Sanchez, and I'm from Los Angeles, California. I am excited to begin this program and help out my community. I graduated from Pacific Union College, and received my degrees in Emergency Management and Health Science. During the past year I have been serving with AmeriCorps and learning about various non profit organizations throughout the country. We built houses, helped in food distribution, and in the COVID-19 vaccination sites. I am eager to learn different ways to help out the community in which I grew up! I hope to create great experiences, grow throughout the program, and serve my community to the best of my ability.

Tania

Hi there! My name is Tania Vasquez, I’m 26 years old, and I was born and raised in La Paz, Bolivia. I moved to LA in the beginning of 2020 to get a master degree. I’m a 2018 graduate from the Universidad Católica Boliviana with a B.A. in International Business. My undergraduate thesis was about female entrepreneurship and how to make Bolivian women lead companies more competitive in international markets. This research work gave me the opportunity to learn more about gender inequalities in Bolivia and challenges that female entrepreneurs face every day.

I’d worked in both private and academic institutions promoting entrepreneurship, innovation and development in my country. Before deciding which career path I’ll keep following within the social impact landscape, I wanted to have an experience that would totally take me out of my comfort zone. I never took the chance to really involve myself in activities out of my “mandatory checklist”, but 2020 was
the year I decided to be part of this program.

My hobbies are singing, playing the guitar, reading and watching movies. I love listening to music and finding new favorites. I also love food! I’m a big fan of tacos, sushi, barbecue, and of course, Bolivian food! And last but not least, I love animals.

I’m very excited to be part of this amazing experience!
